Handstand Training After 40? It Might Be the Smartest Move You Make

Sep 17, 2025

When most people think of handstand, they picture an advanced yoga pose that’s all about flipping upside down. But the truth is, the biggest benefits of handstand have nothing to do with “getting inverted” at all. Working on handstand (even in small, consistent ways) can completely change how you move, think, and feel in your everyday life.

1. Strength You Can Feel in Everything

Handstand drills build shoulder stability, core integration, and hip flexor control. You’ll notice it not just on your mat but when you pick up groceries, lift a suitcase, or play with your kids. It’s functional strength disguised as play.

I’ll never forget the first time I took the tops off my Jeep after I’d been practicing handstand drills. What used to feel so heavy suddenly felt light as air. I nearly laughed out loud as I realized how much strength I’d built without even noticing. Now, every time I lift those panels, I’m reminded of the hidden power in consistent practice... it’s such an empowering feeling.

2. Mobility Without the Grind

The preparation for handstand—wrist warm-ups, shoulder opening, hamstring lengthening—creates a balanced body that moves with ease. Over time, your posture improves, tension releases, and “tight” areas start to open up naturally.

Handstand work focuses on opening and strengthening your shoulders and hips—the areas that often feel tight or tired in midlife. This practice wakes your body up and brings it back to life. Looking youthful has far less to do with wrinkles and far more to do with how freely you can move

3. Nervous System Training

Even just practicing the entry steps into handstand teaches your nervous system to stay calm in challenge. Your brain learns new pathways for balance, focus, and reaction time. That means clearer thinking under pressure and better coordination in daily life. Such a BIG benefit!

4. Confidence That Sticks

There’s something about playing with handstand that makes you braver. Every time you try, even if you don’t get your feet off the floor, you’re practicing courage. That spills over into work presentations, big decisions, and how you show up for yourself.

After spending even a little time each day on handstand practice, I notice the difference immediately—I stand taller, my core stays engaged as I move, and I feel genuinely powerful.

5. Aging in Reverse

I know I've already mentioned this, but Handstand isn’t about being a gymnast; it’s about keeping your body and brain adaptable. Novel movement is one of the most potent anti-aging tools we have. When you challenge yourself in new ways, you stay younger—physically and mentally.

6. Community & Consistency

Working on a “big” skill like handstand gives you a reason to show up regularly. Progress is measurable, and having others doing it alongside you makes the journey fun. That sense of accountability and shared excitement keeps your practice fresh.

Where to Start

You don’t have to kick up to the wall to reap these benefits. Simple drills—like plank holds, block work, Hollowbody's, or shoulder stabilizers—will deliver them, too. The key is a structured plan that guides you week by week and month to month, so you’re not guessing.
