Why “Yoga Lite” is Failing Women in Midlife (and What to Do Instead)

Sep 08, 2025

Have you noticed this trend lately?

Every health and fitness guru says the same thing once you hit 40:
➡️ “You need to lift heavy weights to build muscle.”

And I don’t disagree. Strength training matters.

But here’s the head-scratcher…

The very same voices who push strength training tell you to back off yoga.
Stick to gentle classes. Do restorative. Maybe some “yoga lite” for stretching.
As if we’re fragile.

And honestly? That advice makes ZERO sense.

Why This Advice Falls Short

When we hit midlife, our bodies do change — hormones shift, recovery takes a little longer, and yes, building muscle becomes even more important.

But here’s the thing: strength doesn’t only come from dumbbells.
Yoga, when practiced progressively and intentionally, is a powerhouse form of strength training — especially when you explore arm balances, inversions, and deeper postures.

And unlike traditional workouts, yoga gives you so much more than muscle:

  • Strength & mobility (instead of one or the other)

  • Balance & coordination (critical as we age)

  • Focus & awareness (keeping your brain sharp)

  • Confidence & playfulness (because learning new skills is fun)

So why on earth would we be told to scale back on something that delivers all of that?

Skip the Barbells, Learn a Skill

You don’t have to choose between being strong or being safe.

Handstands, arm balances, and inversions aren’t “party tricks.” They’re skill-based training that works your entire body, fires up your core, stabilizes your shoulders, and keeps you mentally sharp.

And the best part? This kind of practice gets better with age.

Because let’s be honest — in midlife, we bring patience, body awareness, and wisdom that 20-year-olds just don’t have. That makes us perfectly positioned to progress in ways we may not have been able to when we were younger.

Structure Beats Random

Here’s the real secret: it’s not just about showing up to random classes and hoping for progress.

Inside my online studio, we use monthly playlists of classes that are designed to build strength, mobility, and confidence step by step. You always know what you’re working toward, and you can feel your practice moving forward — not spinning its wheels.

And as part of your membership, you don’t just get access to hundreds of classes and livestreams. You also get big skill-building immersions, like the Handstand & Beyond series happening this month.
