There’s No Such Thing as “Doing Yoga Right”
Feb 07, 2026“I guess I’m just always wondering if I’m doing it right,” she said.
I paused because I was getting a major spark of inspiration and a big Truth was hitting me at the same time.
We were in the thick of this month’s Live Q&A session where we explore a posture, or a thought about a posture, a little further and then dive into a bit of Raja Yoga (the philosophical side of yoga).
This month we were focusing on the niyama (exploration of your internal world), Svadhyaya.
Svadhyaya, by definition, is the practice of self-study through awareness. In other words, the habit of observing what you do, how you respond, and why, so your practice (and your life) becomes a teacher, not a test.
And we were discussing habits we have in the practice that stop us from moving forward.
So when this came up with one of my students, I was surprised by the thought that popped into my head.
You were, and will always be, doing your yoga practice right.
Read that again.
You were never doing it wrong. In fact, it’s impossible to do it wrong.
Yes, you learn over time how to access more from a posture, or clean up your alignment. You might even learn “correct technique.”
But you were never doing it wrong. You were moving through the practice with the knowledge you had at the time. With the awareness of your body you had accrued throughout your lifetime. And your current emotional state.
Yoga is a practice. There is no “right” yoga. There is no “wrong” yoga.(And I’d even argue there is no “better” yoga, but that’s an entirely different discussion.)
Isn’t that nice to know? That you could never be “wrong.” That your practice just is what it was meant to be in the moment and that we show up on our yoga mats to simply gain more knowledge day to day, not only about the yoga postures, but our very Self?
For me, having this realization this week has been oh, so freeing.
Because you treat your practice as you treat your life.
So you can’t be doing your life wrong, either. Same principle.
You are already living your destiny. Did you know that?
And every day you move through your life with the knowledge, awareness, and emotions that you have learned over your lifetime.
Every day you show up and learn more.
So this week I hope you let go of “doing it right.”
Simply show up and be the light you already are.
That’s really all that is expected of you… on and off your yoga mat.
Big Hugs,
Tori G. ♡
