3 Tips to Feel Stronger and More Confident in Every Pose
Jul 29, 2025You know that feeling when you step onto your mat and something just feels off? Maybe your shoulders feel glued down, your hips are cranky, or your body is saying, “Nope, not today.” That’s where posture prep changes everything.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen students push straight into a big pose, only to get frustrated when their body isn’t ready for it yet. (I’ve been there, too!)
But here’s the good news: if you take a few extra minutes to prep your body intentionally, your practice feels smoother, more powerful, and way more fun.
1. Wake up your body with active mobility
Instead of just hanging out in a passive stretch, bring your muscles online! Think about it like flipping all the switches on before turning on a big appliance. For example: if you’re prepping for a backbend, try hamstring curls with a block. It fires up the glutes and lengthens the hip flexors so the backbend actually feels supported (and doesn’t just collapse into your low back).
2. Layer the foundations, one step at a time
You do not need to hit the “final shape” right away. I always tell my students: break it down! Try Dolphin Pose before going upside down in Forearm Balance. Use props. Build one layer at a time and give yourself the chance to feel solid at every step. That’s how confidence (and progress) grows.
3. Let your breath lead the way
This one’s huge. If your breath is short and choppy, your nervous system is on high alert. Slow, steady breathing sends a clear message: “We’re safe here.” And when your body feels safe, it opens up in ways that surprise you. Try linking every movement with a full inhale or exhale and see how different your practice feels.
